TEST OF WRITTEN LANGUAGE
Fourth Edition
(TOWL-4)
by Donald D. Hammill & Stephen C. Larsen
Copyright © 2009

The TOWL-4 is a norm-referenced, comprehensive diagnostic test of written expression for studentts ages 9-0 through 17-11 years of age. It is used to (a) identify students who write poorly and, therefore, need special help, (b) determine students’ particular strengths and weaknesses in various writing abilities, (c) document students’ progress in special writing programs, and (d) measure writing in research. The test was normed on 2,505 individuals from 18 states whose demographic characteristics approximate those of the U.S. population in 2005. The sample was stratified by age.
The subtests are Vocabulary, Spelling, Punctuation, Logical Sentences, Sentence Combining, Contextual Conventions, Story Composition, and Composites.
New features of the TOWL-4:
- All new normative data were collected in 2006-2007.
- Now grade-based norms, as well as age-based norms, are provided.
- Almost all floor and ceiling effects have been eliminated.
- Studies of criterion-prediction validity (with large numbers of subjects) have been added.
- Studies of the TOWL-4’s sensitivity, specificity, and false positives have been added to the manual.
- The test items were evaluated to eliminate bias

PRACTICAL IDEAS THAT REALLY WORK FOR
STUDENTS WITH READING DISABILITIES
Improving Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Metacognition
Second Edition
by Kathleen McConnell, Judith Moening, & Gail R. Ryser
Copyright © 2009

This second edition is for educators who work with students with mild to moderate reading disabilities or are struggling to read grade-level content-areas text. Like the other titles in the PITRW series, this easy-to-use resource consists of two main components: Practical Ideas Manual and an Evaluation Form.
The manual has 37 practical intervention ideas, reproducible worksheets, examples, illustrations, and tips designed for easy implementation. Teachers can incorporate these creative and fun materials into their general education curriculum.
The Evaluation Form consists of a Rating Scale, Ideas Matrix, and Intervention Plan. The Rating Scale is a criterion-referenced measure for evaluating reading behaviors that impact student learning. The Ideas Matrix provides a systematic way of linking the results of the Rating Scale to interventions. The Intervention Plan is a record-keeping tool used to document (1) the targeted skills, (2) the interventions tried, and (3) the evaluation.
CD includes all reproducible items for easy printings. Grades 3-9.
