DSM-IV™ Criteria

Item #03900
The Behavior Dimensions Scale - Second Edition (BDS-2) was developed after years of requests from professionals in education and psychology for an assessment instrument for diagnoses that would lead to services in educational and clinical settings. The scale provides an assessment of the following dimensions of behavior which interfere with success of children and adolescents in the educational, home, and community environments:
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder,
  • Oppositional Defiant,
  • Conduct Disorder,
  • Avoidant Personality,
  • Generalized Anxiety, and
  • Major Depressive Episode.
Each dimension of behavior is clarified by behavioral items which are observable overt descriptors of the behavior problems documented by primary observers of the child’s or adolescent’s behavior (i.e., teachers and parents). Frequency-based quantifiers provide precise measures of the rate of problematic behavior, a characteristic not found on other widely used scales.

Because outcome intent (i.e., a successful intervention program for children and adolescents in school and home environments) guided the development of the BDS-2, the scale provides assessment information that translates directly into goals, objectives, and intervention strategies for the six behavior dimensions measured by the scale. For any professional whose primary goal is the development of an appropriate plan of intervention for the child or adolescent, the BDS-2 is certain to become the choice as a behavior-assessment instrument.

Internal consistency, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability; item and factor analysis; and content, diagnostic, criterion-related, and construct validity are documented and reported for the scale.

Characteristics and Components of the BDS-2
  • The BDS-2 is based on the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-IV™ criteria/definition of each behavior disorder.

  • The BDS-2 School Version was standardized on a total of 3,604 students. The BDS-2 Home Version was standardized on a total of 2,315 students.
  • The standardization population included students from 26 states and represented all geographic regions of the United States.

  • The BDS-2 School Version provides separate norms for males and females 5 through 18 years of age.

  • The BDS-2 Home Version provides separate norms for males and females 5 through 18 years of age.

  • The School Version can be completed in approximately 30 minutes and includes 99 items easily observed and documented by educational personnel.

  • The Home Version can be completed by a parent/guardian in approximately 30 minutes and includes 108 items representing behaviors exhibited in and around the home environment.

  • The Behavior Dimensions Intervention Manual includes IEP goals, objectives, and interventions for all 99 items on the School Version of the scale.

  • The BDS-2 Quick Score computer program converts raw scores to standard scores and percentiles which makes scoring efficient and convenient.
